Calmast STEM Forum

A STEM Forum held pre-covid brought representatives from industry, schools and organisations involved in STEM promotion from across the region together in SETU. The purpose of the event was to capture some of the key STEM needs of the region and to learn how Calmast can play a more active co-ordinating role for STEM activities in the future. Some key points and Insights from this Forum include:

  • For industry a recurring key issue is recruiting sufficient STEM graduates
  • The need to embed STEM learning activities more widely into the all aspects of daily life
  • STEM education needs to be more visible in the community and linked to all forms of cultural activity in the region. This includes the work of libraries, museums, street festivals, music events and much more.

Wexford STEM Hub

In general, there was converging consensus amongst the Forum participants for the need and support for a Regional STEM Hub. All participants recognised the need for STEM to be for all and that it needs to move beyond just education institutions and events and embed within communities.

If we can leverage our partner’s networks, we had a far wider reach than an individual endeavour we could develop on our own. Calmast was identified to act as an ‘honest broker’ and now work has begun on the development and implementation strategy to South-East STEM Hub. A Wexford STEM HUB was formed with regular meetings taking place.
